Why businesses should not be forced to operate at night

Kwaku Kwarteng has called on the government to prioritise practical economic measures over political slogans.

The former Deputy Finance Minister criticised proposals to legislate a 24-hour economy. “To legislate and force businesses to operate at night, what is that? Are we going to force people to do business?” he asked on JoyNews’ AM Show.

He stressed that the government should instead concentrate on improving infrastructure, access to credit, and overall economic stability.

“Let us focus on infrastructure that will allow businesses to run properly. Let us focus on credit to the private sector and the stability of the economy,” Kwarteng said.

The Obuasi West MP also highlighted the competitive challenges facing Ghana. “The global economy is becoming more competitive and more hostile for economies like ours.

We need serious reforms on both the revenue and expenditure sides,” he said, emphasizing that such reforms will require careful planning and discussion.

“These are hard reforms. You will face opposition, and you must sit down and have serious discussions,” Kwarteng added.

“There are serious things the government must do to give this economy a future. We should stop the rhetoric and focus on the real work.”
