Public transport reforms underway – Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga says the NDC government is focused on building new systems to strengthen the economy, improve transport, and support long-term development.

He said Ghana’s public transport system was left weak by the previous government.

“The NPP left Ghana a dysfunctional public transportation system,” he stated in a press release.

According to him, this became clear soon after the change in government.

“The low carrying capacity of the public transport system was exposed the very first Christmas season after they left office,” he said.

He explained that government has begun reforms.

“Government has already outlined measures put in place to beef up the fleet of buses of the various state-owned transport companies,” he said.

Ayariga also announced legal steps to formalize the 24-hour economy policy.

“When Parliament resumes in early February, the legal framework for the formalization of the 24 Hours Economy will be passed into law to establish the 24 Hours Economy Authority,” he said.

He linked this to industrial growth.

“The government continues to work towards a 24 Hours Economy by ensuring the creation of a fiscal environment conducive for industrialization and high demand to spur growth in the services sector,” he stated.

He also highlighted other government actions. “The GoldBod remains one of the most innovative mechanisms for leveraging our natural endowments to stabilize our currency,” he said.

On environmental protection, he added; “Government has fought galamsey with unprecedented ferocity and the battle is being won. The rate of destruction of our environment has significantly halted.”

He also praised Ghana’s foreign policy direction. “Ghana’s foreign policy has become very sound and has contributed to the economic diplomacy that has enabled the fast economic turnaround we are witnessing today,” Ayariga said, commending Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for what he called “the dynamism he has brought to the ministry.”
