It’s about impact – Sam George on 1 million coders programme

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George has revealed that government is preparing to scale up the 1 Million Coders programme, with a target of 400,000 trainees this year.

He said the initiative is designed to equip Ghanaians with practical digital skills linked to employment opportunities.

“For me, it’s not about ticking a box. It’s about transforming lives,” he said while speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, monitored by MyNewsGh.

He explained that although the pilot was initially planned for 500 participants, about 94,000 people applied, prompting adjustments to the rollout.

“We took our time to understand how the pilot works before going full scale,” he said.

According to him, full training is expected to begin around April, with a mix of online and in-person learning supported by centres across the country.

“People can learn at their own pace, either online or at community centres with dedicated laptops,” he said.

He added that partnerships with global tech firms and institutions will support certification and job placement.

“We are not just training people. We are building a full chain, including opportunities for employment,” he said.

Sam George said the programme is structured to allow participants to progress from beginner to advanced levels, with internationally recognised certifications.
