Stability must benefit citizens, not just figures

Former Majority Leader and former Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has questioned the sustainability of Ghana’s current economic management, arguing that economic stability should go beyond macroeconomic figures and translate into real improvements in people’s lives.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen, he said the true measure of economic management should be its impact on national development and the daily experiences of citizens.

“Managing the economy should translate into the development of the country, which ultimately affects citizens. It is not just about macroeconomic indicators,” he said.

He acknowledged recent signs of stability in the economy, including the performance of the cedi and inflation levels, but stressed that these developments must be examined critically.

“While the cedi has stabilised and inflation has declined, we need to examine how this stability is being achieved,” he said. “If the government is using dollars to support the cedi, and the currency is treated as consumption money, how sustainable is that stabilisation?”

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also raised concerns about how public debts are being managed, warning that long-term reliance on the same financial resources could create future problems.

“If debts are being paid on a continuous basis using the same resources, we must ask how sustainable this approach really is,” he stated.

He argued that without a clear and sustainable strategy, short-term economic improvements may not translate into lasting development, leaving citizens without meaningful benefits from the so-called stability.
